George Lyons: EfL Volunteer team Leader in EfL

George has recently undertaken the role of team leader to the volunteer tutors in Springfield School on Thursdays, between enjoying time in his garden.

George attended Coleraine Academical Institution and while there excelled in sport, mainly rugby, soccer and athletics. It was this love of sport that framed his future career as from Coleraine Academical Institution George trained as a teacher in Stranmillis College studying physical education, English, history and geography. After completing teacher training he joined the staff at Ballyclare Secondary School and soon rose through the ranks to become head of physical education, a member of the senior school management team and took responsibility for youth and pastoral care. Soon George’s talents were recognised by NEELB (North-Eastern Education and Library Board) and they seconded him for three years to organise the summer youth activity in County Antrim.

George spent his remaining teaching career in Maghera High School under headmaster Peter McCausland. As George himself remembers fondly, ‘what a privilege to serve under the inspirational leadership of Peter McCausland’. During his nine years in Maghera, George was teacher in charge of physical education, primary school links advisor and youth sport coordinator. He also found time to coach the All-Ireland Schools under-fifteen basketball team for three years.
